You can! One of my favorite InDesign secrets is creating makeshift “artboards.” This particularly comes in handy when creating multiple social media graphics, and you want to be able to view all of them at once, rather than having to scroll vertically down your screen to see page after page. These objects will most likely not bleed or will be clipped during cutting. So wouldn’t it be great if you could combine the functionality of Illustrator artboards with InDesign editing? Improperly Bleeding Object - DO NOT place objects right up against the trim line. And in Illustrator, again, you can only achieve this by creating a clipping mask. You can easily crop images in InDesign by resizing your image frame and moving the image within it. Altdrag (Windows) or Option-drag (Mac OS) to draw from the center. Shift-drag to constrain the slice to a square. Select the Slice tool and drag over the area where you want to create a slice. You can easily hide items that hang off your pages in InDesign (toggling with the W key), while in Illustrator you have to create a clipping mask to view everything contained within your artboard. Do one of the following: Select one or more objects on the artboard, and choose Object > Slice > Make. Might need to be 0px or 1px, or something else. You may need to play with the gutter width in-between rows. To create crop marks as live effect, select Effect > Crop Marks. To create editable trim marks or crop marks, select Object > Create Trim Marks. To use crop marks, do the following: Select the object. Draw a rectangle the exact same size as artboard. In Illustrator, you can create editable trim/crop marks or create crop marks as live effects. The crop tool functions in a very similar fashion, requiring you to make a transparent vector object to overlay on top of the artboard. Have the finished artwork on one artboard in AI. For example, I love the way that you can easily layout multiple artboards in Illustrator, but I much prefer working in InDesign for several reason: First make sure the artwork is already sized to fit that 3x4 grid. I equally love both InDesign and Illustrator, but oftentimes I wish I could combine the functionality of the two.
